General Recertification Requirements
DANB certification is valid for one year. The certification expiration date is listed on the certificate. Certificants who do not renew their DANB certification are no longer DANB certified and may not use the DANB certification marks. CDA, COA, CDPMA and COMSA are registered certification marks of DANB. Certified Dental Assistant and CPFDA are trademarks of
DANB. These certification marks and trademarks are the property of DANB and can only be used with DANB’s permission.
DANB will mail the renewal notice approximately six weeks prior to the DANB certification expiration date. The certificant will be asked to sign a renewal statement attesting that the CDE and CPR requirements have been met, and to return the statement with the appropriate renewal fee to DANB postmarked by the expiration date. Renewal fees are not refundable. If DANB does not receive the signed renewal statement and appropriate fee, postmarked by the expiration date, a three-month grace period will begin and a $15 late fee is assessed. DANB certification is considered current during the grace period.
Certificate and wallet card processing takes aproximately four weeks.

General Continuing Dental Education (CDE) Requirements
To renew DANB certification, the DANB Certificant must earn and retain proof of at least 12 CDE credits and current DANB-approved CPR certification. A recertification notice will be mailed approximately 6 weeks prior to the expiration date. The DANB Certificant will be asked to sign a statement attesting that CDE and CPR requirements have been met, and to return the statement to DANB with the appropriate renewal fee. Renewal fees are not refundable. Certificants should not send proof of CDE unless they are chosen for record verification (audit).
Some DANB Certificants will be randomly selected for verification (audit) of their CDE credits. Those selected for verification (audit) will be considered certified during the time that they are providing proof of their CDE. Specific instructions will be sent to those audited. Upon successful completion of the audit, DANB certification will be instated for the full year. Proof of CDE should be retained for prior two years, in case of subsequent audit. Certificants not selected for audit will have their certification renewed for a full year.

Education Documentation
DANB accepts confirmation letters from CDE providers, certificates of completion, transcripts, and grade reports. A meeting badge and meeting program page or a CDE printout are acceptable proof of having attended table clinics or on-site lectures at dental and dental assisting meetings sponsored by recognized dental groups.
All documentation must indicate the name of the sponsor, the date of the course, the number of CDE credits, the subject matter, the program title and the program presenter. The Certificant is responsible for obtaining and retaining CDE documentation.

DANB Recertification Policy
I. All Continuing Dental Education (CDE) must directly relate to the practice of
dentistry or dental assisting to maintain or improve dental assisting knowledge or skill.
Note: CDE does not need to be pre-approved by DANB in order to be accepted as meeting DANB Recertification Requirements. Call DANB at 1-800-367-3262 prior to participation in education if you have questions about appropriateness
of content, or click here to e-mail DANB's Manager, Recertification.
II. Programs must be at least 45 minutes to qualify for one
CDE credit. Credit for a CDE course will be calculated in 15 minute increments (i.e., 1 ½
hours = 1.5 CDE credits, 2 ¾ hours = 2.75 CDE credits).
III. Education dated prior to initial certification date cannot be used to meet
DANB CDE requirements. Certificants must earn the required CDE
credits during the first year of certification to maintain certification.
IV. CDE has a two-year lifespan. Certificants who carry over credits into the next renewal year must retain proof of 24 credits of CDE over a two-year period.
V. Multiple Certification: It is possible to hold multiple DANB certifications. Renewal requirements are set at approximately 50% increase over basic requirements for each additional certification maintained.
VI. Renewal Timing and Expiration: A three-month grace period is granted if the
required CDE credits are not accumulated and appropriate fee is not received by the
expiration date. An individual is considered certified during this three-month grace
period, however, a late fee of $15 will be assessed. If DANB does not receive a response to renewal statement(s) within three months of the certificate expiration date, the individual is no longer certified and cannot use the CDA, COA, CPFDA, COMSA, or CDPMA certification mark. Misuse of any DANB certification mark is grounds for discipline under DANB's Discipline Policies and Procedures (contact DANB for a copy). To reinstate a DANB certification, contact DANB at 1-800-367-3262, ext. 445, or email vspears@danb.org.
VII. Emeritus Status: Available to a Certificant who becomes totally or permanently disabled and maintained Certification five years prior to disability, or retired at age 60 or above and maintained certification five years prior to retirement, or retired with 35 years of continuous DANB Certification. Please contact the DANB office for full information on the "Emeritus Status." Once Emeritus Status is earned, Certificants must use this designation; i.e., Sue Smith, CDA-Emeritus.
